An original and energetic new sound created by seven musicians, IKESTRA promises to be a powerful force on the UK music scene. Most commonly described as ‘genre-less’ by those who have experienced it, IKESTRA’s music can be best understood as a unique balance. It is ancient and forward thinking, avant-garde and popular, electric and acoustic, hypnotic and surprising, challenging and accessible. For those in need of genres, it is experimental head nod psychedelic cyclical math rock cosmic grime afrobeat progressive hiphop free jazz noise with vocals.
Originally formed in 2010 by Joe Harris after quitting music college, IKESTRA has been through several personel changes before settling on the current line-up in early 2011. The musicians have all been active in the Leeds music scene for years and share a mutual love of improvised music, especially jazz.
In 2015, they released a debut single, double AA Sprinter/Endure for digital self-release. They have their first album recorded and mixed ready to master, and are currently building up connections with like minded people who can help gain them wider exposure.
IKESTRA is Sam Bell (percussion), Sam Gardner (drums), Henry Guy (Bass), Joe Harris (guitar), Tom Henry (keys/synths), Craig Scott (guitar) & Anna Stott (vocals). The name relates to the oneness symbolised in the ‘I’ and Sun Ra’s legendary Arkestra.
“Ikestra is avant-garde. It’s post rock music that’s post what everyone thinks. It’s everything from unconventional time signatures to bedazzling rhythmic overlaps to needle point precision. And this is only the beginning…” – inhabitonline.co.uk (independent music, arts & culture website)
“Ikestra is super dope, funky fresh and inspiringly original! I love everything I have heard so far! With subtle hints of afrobeat, Indian music, hip-hop and jazz, I feel that they still manage to achieve a uniquely distinctive contemporary sound” – Ruby Wood (Bonobo & Submotion Orchestra)
